15.4 Double-Angle and Half-Angle Identities

Setting both angles equal in the angle addition identities gives the double-angle identities, and solving those for the smaller angle gives the half-angle identities.

Double angles

Problem 15.4.1. Find and . Test your identities with and .

Show solution

and Testing with : and For : , and

Problem 15.4.2. Find in terms of .

Show solution

Half angles

Problem 15.4.3. Use the double-angle identities for sine and cosine with to find and in terms of . Test with .

Show solution

From we get . And so If is an angle in quadrant I, it is positive; for cosine we can say it is negative (by “it” I mean our ) iff is in quadrant II or III. So OR Using we get similar ().

Problem 15.4.4. it’s weird.

Problem 15.4.5. Show that .

Show solution

Well, If instead idk why we drop ?

Using double and half angles

Example 15.4.6. Prove that by using three well-chosen triangles on the Cartesian plane.

Show solution
Coordinate plane with points (0,1), (0,2), (2,2) and (3,0) joined into three right triangles that meet at (0,1), where their three angles together make a straight angle.

Problem 15.4.7. Compute the number of degrees in the smallest positive angle that satisfies the equation .

Show solution

(I think?). Wait, no: pull out . So and So and , , so .

Problem 15.4.8. Find .

Show solution

In radians this is , with and .

Using and :

Instead: , so .

Show solution

(b) Do the same for .

Show solution

(c) Suppose for some angle , with . Determine .

Show solution

so

Let’s start again: Using : (and the other way round, ). So so , and
