15.6 Solving Triangles with the Laws of Sines and Cosines

The law of cosines and the law of sines find the missing sides and angles of a triangle from the ones we know.

The law of cosines

Theorem 15.6.1 (Law of cosines). where is the angle between sides and , opposite side (for example, sides and with between them).

Solving right triangles

Example 15.6.2. (a) In , we have , , and . Find and .

Show solution
Right triangle ABC with the right angle at B, hypotenuse AC = b = 6, angle 24 degrees at A, angle theta = 66 degrees at C, and legs a = BC and c = AB.

and . Angle, side, angle: and .

(b) In , , , and . Find .

Show solution
Right triangle PQR with the right angle at Q, legs PQ = 7 and QR = 24, hypotenuse PR = 25, angle alpha at P and angle beta at R.

, so . Then , and is .
